Sylvia's Place
Sylvia's Place, Allegan County's domestic violence survivor services provider, offers temporary emergency shelter for women and children fleeing domestic abuse in their homes. During their stay we assist them in regaining their confidence and self- esteem so they can rebuild their independence and begin violence free lives. We connect them with the community resources they need to achieve their housing, employment, education and transportation goals to support themselves and their children. We also offer residents of our shelter substance abuse prevention through grant funded visiting counselor programs and access to community resources if necessary.
Our separate office location (151 Brady Street Allegan/673-4831) provides legal advocacy and support to assist women in navigating the court systems they may be involved in due to criminal cases against their abusers and civil issues such as custody and divorce. Our agency is involved in the meth task force because the women and children we serve are sometimes exposed to meth due to the abuser in their home using or manufacturing it. Also, our agency likes to be involved in issues that affect the community as a whole because we care about people and want everyone to be as healthy as possible. The devastating effects of this drug taint our children and our environment. Addiction to this drug is another obstacle to ending domestic violence and therefore is something we are interested in uniting with others to fight against. We are proud of the progress this task force has made and look forward to continuing to be part of the solution to this extensive problem.
